CTCMath – A Curriculum Review

Disclaimer-NewRecently, I was offered the opportunity to try out CTCMath – 12 month family membership in our homeschool curricula.  Read on to know more about the program and our experience.

CTCMath

What is CTC Math?

Patrick Murray, an Australian math instructor, developed and instructs CTC Math, a K–12 online math course with a subscription model, including Calculus. Although it could potentially be used to augment other math courses, its primary purpose is to serve as your math program.

Grade levels and courses available in CTCMath include:

  • Kindergarten
  • 1st grade
  • 2nd grade
  • 3rd grade
  • 4th grade
  • 5th grade
  • 6th grade
  • Basic Math and Pre-Algebra
  • Elementary Measurement
  • Elementary Geometry
  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II
  • Trigonometry
  • Pre-Calculus
  • Calculus
Every class starts with a quick tutorial that lasts anywhere between four and nine minutes.  Patrick Murray provides the voice-over narration for the tutorials’ vibrant images and animations.
In contrast to some other programs where the presentation style and voice-overs constantly change, this program feels more personalized and predictable due to the consistency of hearing just one voice.

For easy reference or review, you can print out a one-page summary of each video tutorial. There is just one tutorial available for each topic, but if a student requires further assistance, parents can contact customer service.   CTC offers 26-problem printable weekly review sheets. These evaluations should enable you to identify any weak points right immediately.
The tutorial is followed by a set of interactive questions for the students. Students either use the mouse to select an answer or type their responses into the computer. Their work is promptly scored by the application, which also keeps track of pupil progress. You can print a page with the issues and their detailed remedies.

Assessment

What is different?

CTCMath does not use the common core at all; instead, they embrace a more conventional method of teaching math.
A Question Bank Wizard (QBW) is a feature of CTCMath that enables you to design printed worksheets or online interactive sets of questions that are tailored to particular themes. The questions’ level of difficulty can be chosen, and the QBW can be programmed to generate a specific number of questions or to run for a specific period of time (for interactive online sets).  Clicking a button will cause the application to add room for solving issues if you are making a printable worksheet.  With the QBW, you can include as much focused practice or review as you like. In order to tailor the level of difficulty to each learner, the QBW also offers this option.  The independent practice in CTCMath is in the form of a worksheet with numerous problems that must all be thoroughly completed before you receive any feedback regarding whether you’ve finished them correctly.  If you discover that you’ve made a number of mistakes, this might be frustrating.

Grading and Reports:

CTCMath uses multiple choice format in assessments.  You choose the solution to each problem from the bank of answers provided below the worksheet, filling in the appropriate box with the letter of the solution you choose. The bank of answers includes numerous non-answers, so you guess using elimination. When you’ve completed all the boxes, you turn in the worksheet for evaluation.  So if the student has calculated an answer that is not in the answer bank, they know they need to try again — before ever being graded on the assignment.

Parents can print out certificates of completion from the program for each section if they like. Parents have access to comprehensive reports that explain the subjects covered, the amount of time spent studying, and the results of quizzes and tests. Additionally, reports and certificates may be automatically forwarded to the teacher or parent.  This helps maintaining the homeschooling transcript and makes it so easy.

When you’re finished, CTCMath lets you continue your level. You can decide what a passing grade is for your student, and if they obtain it or a higher mark on a particular subject, they can move on to the following one. CTC doesn’t require students to stay there until they receive a perfect score or any other grade but the one you’ve assigned. They DO NOT HAVE to repeat, but they CAN if they choose to.

How did we like it?

My son(neurotypical) was able to use this in a self directed manner.  He was allowed to skip topics and focus on topics he needed practice with in a flexible manner!
Here are some excellent reasons why I adore this program so much:
  • It can be blended or done online, and it can be converted into a spiral or mastery method (by printing out lessons and worksheets).
  • It is multimodal and can be used as a core curriculum or a supplement.
  • Since ALL levels K–12 are accessible, your children can work independently and at their own pace.
May not be the right fit for kids with short attention span, however could be a great fit for auditory, self directed learners.  We used CTC Math as a supplement to our regular curriculum as well as summer enrichment.

How much does it cost?

With a 12-month money-back guarantee, CTCMath provides subscription programs for one month, one year, and both (no questions asked). Additionally, they provide family plans for two or more students as well as memberships for just one student. The family package for a full year is unquestionably the greatest price, particularly if you have more than two kids. The software assigns a unique login to each learner and monitors their progress. For the duration of the subscription, every grade level is available to the student. This is especially helpful because it can be challenging to pinpoint a single grade level that satisfies all of a given child’s educational demands, and your child may finish more than one grade level in a year.  See the prices below, please keep in mind that they are subject to change. Click on links where available to verify price accuracy.
Homeschoolers receive a half-price discount off the normal prices, YAY!
Individual student: $14.97 per month or $98.50 for 12 months
Family (all your children): $19.97 per month or $148.50 for 12 months

Final thoughts:

The program is designed in a way that reads out every question. So, your child won’t have to battle with reading during math time, if they have reading difficulties.  If you are looking for a user-friendly, self-paced, inexpensive math program, I highly recommend CTCMath.

Read what other homeschooling families have to say about CTCMath.  Finally, take into account what is best for YOUR family, including your budget, time commitment, etc, as well as the learning style of YOUR student.  This math program may equip your child to learn and do math without you, thanks to CTC Math’s clear instructions, guided practice, and independent practice.  Talk about reducing your day’s stress while homeschooling, check them out below!
